Indonesia Tackles Bullying in Doctor Training Program

The Indonesian Health Ministry, along with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology and law enforcement officers, are establishing a task force to address bullying in the Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS) following the case of Dr. Aulia Risma Lestari in Semarang. The task force aims to improve the efficiency of identifying bullying cases and create a stronger deterrent effect. Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that the initiative will be implemented systematically across all teaching hospitals and medical faculties throughout Indonesia, emphasizing the need for empathy among specialist doctors. He encouraged PPDS students to report instances of bullying directly to the Health Ministry and advised seniors to break the chain of bullying, which can have a detrimental effect on their juniors' mental well-being while they care for patients.

School District Sued Over Teen's Bullying-Linked Death

The family of a 16-year-old girl who killed herself after being bullied by her classmates has filed a wrongful death complaint against her school district, alleging that teachers took a "callous disregard" to her welfare and even joined in with the bullies. The case is one of several lawsuits launched by parents of students who have died by suicide after being bullied, despite police investigations often concluding without charges being brought against the alleged perpetrators. According to data from the United Educators Association, about two dozen US kids take their own lives each year after classroom bullying, and a quarter of students are bullied regularly due to a youth mental health crisis driven by peer pressure and social media. The Megan Meier Foundation notes that kids who have been bullied or cyber-bullied are twice as likely to try to end their lives as others.
