A federal judge has blocked Elon Musk's DOGE from accessing sensitive U.S. Treasury Department material, dealing a setback to his grip on the Education Department. The Institute of Education Sciences (IES), which tracks student progress and evaluates the effectiveness of federal programs, has had 169 contracts cut by DOGE, including $1.5 million for training in diversity, equity and inclusion. Advocates say the cuts are counterproductive and destructive, as they could hurt accountability and leave the nation in the dark on schools' effectiveness. The cuts include research on teaching elementary school reading, math learning acceleration, and supports for youth with disabilities. The Education Department's spokesperson says the action will not affect its primary work, including the NAEP assessment and College Scorecard.
