US Arrears Jeopardize Global Influence

Published on 3.29.25

The United States' unpaid dues to international organizations have significant implications for its standing within global institutions and its ability to participate in decision-making processes. As of December 2024, the US had arrears of $25.70 million with the World Trade Organization (WTO), which could lead to "administrative measures" under WTO rules. This has already resulted in the US being classified as a Category 1 debtor, limiting its representatives' ability to preside over WTO bodies and receive formal documentation. The country's decision to put payments on hold for the 2024 and 2025 budgets has sparked concerns about its reliability as a financial partner. The US owes CHF22.7 million to other international organizations, including the United Nations, which warns that cuts in international aid could reverse progress made in reducing child mortality. Five other WTO member countries are also in Category 1 arrears, but the situation is most critical for the US due to its significant influence on global institutions and decision-making processes.
