The recent efforts by Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari to revamp the theatre scene in Punjab have sparked a renewed focus on preserving the unique identity of Pakistani stage dramas while maintaining high standards and moral values. As part of this initiative, Bokhari has emphasized that vulgarity and obscenity will not be tolerated in theatres, threatening a lifetime ban for any performer who violates set standards of practice (SOPs). This move is aimed at making theatre environments family-friendly, as per the minister's vision to provide quality recreation to people.
The Punjab Arts Council head has announced plans to conduct surprise visits to theatres across the district to ensure compliance with regulations and monitor the situation in collaboration with deputy commissioners and district administration. The minister expressed strong dissatisfaction with poor cleanliness and administrative mismanagement during a recent inspection of several theatres, including Mehfil Theatre, Prince Theatre, and Tamaseel Theatre.
The upcoming launch of a new family theatre at Alhamra Lahore is expected to set a new standard for clean and well-managed theatres. Additionally, the Punjab Censor Board will be reconstituted within two to three days to ensure that all performances adhere to the set standards. The minister's commitment to preserving Pakistani stage dramas' unique identity has been welcomed by many in the industry, with some seeing it as a much-needed revival of traditional values and high-quality entertainment.
