Malaysia's Education Ministry Employs Design Thinking in RM8.412 Billion School Revamp

Published on 4.6.25

The Education Ministry's efforts to revamp dilapidated schools are a prime example of the integration of design thinking in education. The ministry has approved 1,076 redevelopment projects worth RM8.412 billion as of 2024, which includes repurposing existing school rooms into special-use classrooms such as arts and Design and Technology rooms. This approach is in line with the vision of experts like Sarah Stein Greenberg, Executive Director of Stanford's d.school, who emphasizes the importance of a flexible physical environment for unlocking innovative behavior. Similarly, design thinking can drive innovation and adaptability across sectors, which is crucial in preparing students for an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world. Professor Wasif Rizvi advocates for universities to become spaces for exploration, experimentation, and leadership development, aligning with the Malaysian Education Ministry's efforts to create innovative learning environments that foster creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
