Northeastern's Python Pivot Sparks Faculty Fears

Northeastern University's computer science curriculum is being revised to focus on the programming language Python, which has raised concerns among some faculty members. The current curriculum emphasizes systematic program design skills, such as those taught in courses like "Fundies" and Object-Oriented Design, which are seen as essential for students to adapt to new technologies in their future careers. However, the proposed changes have sparked debate, with some arguing that a focus on Python could leave students unprepared for advanced coursework and industry demands. The shift away from systematic design skills is particularly concerning, as these skills are considered fundamental to programming and are not taught in AP Computer Science courses, which will now be accepted as credits towards the new curriculum.
