Louvre's $1 Billion Renaissance Revamp Planned

The Louvre museum in Paris is set to undergo a major renovation, with plans to create a new room specifically dedicated to the Mona Lisa by 2031. The project aims to better showcase the famous painting and improve the overall visitor experience. As part of the renovation, the existing entrance under the glass pyramid designed by I.M. Pei will be redesigned into new exhibition halls. The Louvre's current 9 million annual visitors are expected to increase to up to 12 million, with costs financed through a combination of museum income, donations, and increased entrance fees. From January 2026, non-European visitors will face higher entrance fees, although the exact amount has not been specified.

Macron Moves Mona Lisa Amid Paris Overcrowding Crisis

The Louvre Museum in Paris is facing a crisis due to overcrowding and logistical problems. The museum's most popular attraction, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, is now displayed behind protective glass in its largest room, where it is often overlooked by visitors who are more focused on taking selfies with the painting. The museum received 8.7 million visitors last year, exceeding its capacity of four million annual visitors, with many coming from countries such as the US, China, Italy, the UK, Germany and Spain. In response to the issue, French President Emmanuel Macron has announced plans to move the Mona Lisa to a dedicated room, following a suggestion by museum director Laurence des Cars. This decision comes as other countries, including Spain, are also grappling with the impact of mass tourism on their housing markets, with some considering taxing foreign buyers to address the issue.

Macron Unveils Louvre Renovation Plans for 2031

The French government will launch a six-year renovation of the Louvre museum in Paris to accommodate its record-breaking number of visitors, which has doubled since it was modernized in the 1980s. The renovation aims to increase capacity from 9 million to 12 million visitors per year and will include a new entrance on the eastern facade, as well as a dedicated space with a separate entrance for the Mona Lisa, which attracts around 20,000 visitors daily. The project is expected to be financed through the Louvre's own funds, ticket sales, sponsorships, and earnings from its sister museum in Abu Dhabi. President Emmanuel Macron said that the renovation will not burden taxpayers and will be completed by 2031 at the latest.

Minnesota Yard Sale Find May Be $15 Million Van Gogh

A painting bought for less than $50 at a Minnesota yard sale is believed to be a $15 million Van Gogh masterpiece. Experts from digital agency Odd Common have been studying the piece and believe it was painted by Van Gogh while he was a patient at a psychiatric hospital in southern France. The signature "Elimar" on the painting matches another verified Van Gogh work, and experts note that the Dutch artist often did not sign his own name. They also found similarities between the painting and works by Danish painter Michael Ancher, suggesting that Van Gogh may have copied other artists' styles during this period. To verify the piece's provenance, experts enlisted the help of Jennifer Mass, president of Scientific Analysis of Fine Art, who studied the pigment and composition of the canvas. They also consulted with Ben Appleton, a patent lawyer, to determine the origin of one of the colors used in the painting, which was found to match a 1883 French patent filed by Colored Materials and Chemical Products of Saint-Denis, a suburb in Paris.
