UK to Ban Sexually Explicit Deepfake Images This Year

Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips has vowed to ban the creation of sexually explicit deepfake images this year, citing her own experience as a target of the technology. A private members' bill was proposed by Tory peer Baroness Owen in the Lords but failed to gain government support. The issue is being raised due to concerns over AI-generated videos being used for sexual exploitation, child pornography, fraud and political disinformation. Last year, explicit deepfakes of celebrities such as Taylor Swift went viral on social media, while actress Emma Watson was targeted by a fake ad featuring her engaging in a sexual act. In 2023, deepfaked videos received 34 million views, with women making up 99% of those targeted.

AI Beats Humans in Ovarian Cancer Diagnosis

A new study published in Nature Medicine found that a specially trained AI program achieved an accuracy rate of over 86% in identifying ovarian cancer by scanning ultrasounds, outperforming human experts and non-experts. The AI program was trained on over 17,000 ultrasound images from nearly 3,700 patients across 20 hospitals in eight countries. Researchers found that the AI could provide valuable support in diagnosing ovarian cancer, particularly in difficult-to-diagnose cases and areas with a shortage of ultrasound experts. In a simulated care scenario, the AI reduced expert referrals by 63% and misdiagnosis rates by 18%. The study suggests that AI-based tools could contribute to faster and more cost-effective care for patients with ovarian lesions, but further research is needed to validate these findings.

Anthropic Sued Over AI Music Lyrics Use

The debate over the use of copyrighted material in training generative AI models continues, with advocates arguing that remixing and altering content constitutes fair use. This argument has been central to companies like Anthropic's defense against lawsuits from music publishers. The publishers are seeking a court injunction to prevent Anthropic from using copyrighted music lyrics in its models, citing concerns that the technology could be used to generate music without the consent of the original creators. Companies like OpenAI and Google have made their money on platforms and network effects, not by selling copyrighted material, leading to tension between Hollywood and Silicon Valley. Publishers are fighting for more control over their content, with some companies exploring revenue-sharing models, but the issue remains unresolved.
