Bolsonaro Supporters Damage Brasilia's Art Treasures

Brazilian authorities have recovered 21 works of art that were vandalized during the January 8, 2023 uprisings in Brasilia. The artworks, which include paintings, vases, and sculptures, were damaged by alleged followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro who attacked democracy. A historic table clock belonging to Portuguese King Joao VI was among the items restored, with a Swiss jeweler covering the cost of its restoration. Other pieces, including an Italian glazed ceramic amphora and paintings by Emiliano Di Cavalcanti, were repaired at a total cost of $330,000 using public funds. The restorers left marks on some works to serve as scars and prevent similar incidents from happening again.

Damascus Museum Reopens After Six-Year Closure

The Damascus museum in Syria was severely impacted by the country's civil war, which began in 2011. The museum's collection, which spans over 10,000 years and includes items such as prehistoric blades, Greco-Roman sculptures, and Islamic art, was closed for six years to protect it from violence or looting. The museum reopened in 2018 after President Assad regained control of the area.

Beuys' Radical Roots at the Broad LA

A retrospective exhibition at the Broad in Los Angeles is challenging the notion that identity politics is a modern trend by showcasing the work of Joseph Beuys, who explored themes of masculinity and environmental activism in his work from the 1950s to the 1970s. The exhibition highlights Beuys's use of sculpture, performance, and ephemera to critique stereotypically masculine pursuits such as war, sport, and commerce. Curators Andrea Gyordy and Sarah Loyer position the show as a reflection on Beuys's environmental activism, including his membership in Germany's Green Party and his monumental work "7000 Oaks," which involved planting 100 trees in Kassel, Germany during documenta 7.

Her use of a Pentax Spotmatic single reflex camera with black-and-white film is notable, and one of her self-portraits from 1979 is included in the exhibition.
