US Department of Education Cracks Down on Defaults

The US Department of Education, in collaboration with the Treasury, will oversee the student loan program responsibly, ensuring borrowers repay their loans for financial health and national economic stability. Federal borrowers owe $1.6 trillion in debt, which can lead to default after 270 days (9 months) if payments are missed. The government has the right to withhold tax returns, 15% of federal salaries, and 15% of Social Security benefits from defaulted borrowers through the Treasury Offset Program. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasizes that taxpayers should not be responsible for paying off others' loans, stating "If you take out a loan, you have to pay it back — very simple."

California Defies Trump's Funding Threat Over Diversity Programs

The California Department of Education has stated that it complies with federal law regarding school diversity programs, which are part of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The Trump administration is threatening funding cuts to schools that don't comply with its interpretation of Title VI, but California says this action is illegal. Some Southern California school districts, such as Chino Valley Unified School District in San Bernardino County, have already certified their compliance and will not be affected by the deadline. Other districts, like Capistrano Unified School District in Orange County, claim they haven't received a request to certify their compliance and are focused on supporting all students' academic success and well-being.
