The COPIED Act, proposed by Senators Maria Cantwell, Marsha Blackburn, and Martin Heinrich, aims to establish consistent methods for watermarking AI-generated content, ensuring digital authenticity and protecting creators’ ownership. The law requires artificial intelligence service providers, including OpenAI, to embed machine-readable origin information into their produced material. This measure is intended to promote transparency and prevent the misuse of deepfakes, which can be used to create counterfeit content without permission. Senator Blackburn emphasized the need to protect individuals from having their images copied and profited off without their knowledge. The proposed legislation aims to discourage such immoral behavior by making it harder for fake content to be exploited undetected.
