Artificial intelligence (AI) poses a significant threat to national security, particularly in the context of elections. Foreign enemies may use AI to influence US elections and disseminate disinformation, making it more challenging for authorities to detect and prevent such activities. The growth of AI technology is expected to continue, potentially lowering protection against criminals and giving sophisticated foreign governments the capacity to meddle in elections. AI deepfakes, which can create realistic audio or video recordings, have already been used to manipulate voters. For example, robocalls mimicking President Joe Biden were made in January to discourage New Hampshire voters from participating in the primary election.
