The research team employed AI detection methods, including unsupervised machine learning algorithms like Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP), to analyze the vocalizations of orangutans. They also used supervised machine learning approaches to train AI models to classify the ape’s calls. The study found that orangutan long calls exhibit a high degree of complexity, with distinct phases and pulses that can be combined into variable sequences. This suggests that AI algorithms may be able to decipher the meaning behind these complex vocalizations.
