UCSD Researchers to Build AI Model for Opioid Addiction Risk

Doctor Rodney Gabriel and his colleagues at UCSD will spend the next three years attempting to build an AI prediction model for opioid addiction. Dr. Gabriel discussed using artificial intelligence (AI) to track patients’ risk of addiction based on their electronic medical records; and acknowledged concerns about AI transparency, emphasizing the importance of understanding why the model is making certain predictions. The goal is to use this technology to provide better care to patients by identifying those at high risk of addiction.
