UT System Offers Free Tuition to Low-Income Families

The University of Texas System will offer free tuition to students from families with an annual income of $100,000 or less. The plan, which is expected to be approved by the Board of Regents, will apply to students attending any of the system's nine academic institutions in Texas, including those located in Arlington, Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Permian Basin, Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio and Tyler. The decision aims to ease the financial burden on lower-income households and is being funded through endowment distributions, the Available University Fund and other resources. This comprehensive financial aid programme will make the University of Texas system one of the few in the United States to offer such a plan, following a similar announcement by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that students with family income below $200,000 may attend tuition-free starting next fall.

MIT Aims to Make Education Accessible to All Students

According to a recent report, the average earnings for individuals with a bachelor's degree in the U.S. were approximately $77,600 in 2023. Meanwhile, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) aims to make its education accessible to students from all financial backgrounds, as stated by Stu Schmill, MIT's dean of admissions and student financial services. Despite this goal, nearly 38% of the university's total student body of around 12,000 students are undergraduates, suggesting that a significant portion of students may still face financial challenges in pursuing their education at the institution.
