Violence in Schools Soars by 40% in UK

Violence among primary school pupils is on the rise, with a 40% increase in exclusions for physical assault between autumn 2022 and 2023. In total, 25,724 suspensions and expulsions were recorded, including 15,283 assaults against adults and 10,441 against other children. The NASUWT teaching union's general secretary, Dr Patrick Roach, attributes the increase to the pandemic, stating that schools often fail to effectively address serious assaults on teachers. The National Education Union's assistant general secretary, Rosamund McNeil, blames chronic underfunding for larger class sizes and a loss of experienced teachers and pastoral posts, creating an environment conducive to behavioural issues.
