Pakistan's FDE Sparks Outrage Over New Exam Policy

The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) in Pakistan has announced a new policy where students who fail their board exams will be admitted as private candidates, rather than being allowed to reappear as regular candidates. This decision has sparked criticism from parents, who argue that it is unjust and discriminatory, and serves only to improve the FDE's performance metrics rather than prioritizing student welfare. Parents have called on the FDE to reconsider its decision and align its policies with the Education for All initiative, which aims to provide equal opportunities for all students to excel academically.

Tamil Nadu Fights Union Education Regulations

The Tamil Nadu government has faced opposition from various parties and individuals over a recent move by the Union government to introduce new regulations in education. Educationist Jayaprakash Gandhi questioned the motive behind the regulations, suggesting that they may be an attempt to undermine state autonomy in educational policy-making. The DMK's youth wing plans to protest against the regulations through poster campaigns, while PMK and VCK leaders have pledged their support to the government in opposing the move. Advisor Ponraj accused the Union government of systematically privatizing public institutions to favor private entities, a claim that has sparked concerns among educationists and politicians in Tamil Nadu, which is home to 22 top-ranked universities and 6% of the country's higher educational institutions.

Stalin Slams Centre Over Hindi Imposition in TN

Tamil Nadu is considered a trend-setter in India for its progress in medicine, education, and social welfare, according to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The state has a lower poverty rate of 2.2% compared to the national average of 14.96%, and aims to eradicate poverty through the Thayumanavar scheme within two years. Tamil Nadu also boasts the highest number of women workers in India, accounting for 41% of the country's female workforce. Despite this progress, Stalin claims that the central government is attempting to undermine the state's autonomy by imposing Hindi language and withholding funds. He also criticized the Governor's appointment of Vice-Chancellors at state universities, citing the state's authority to govern its own institutions. In response, the DMK Students Wing plans to hold a massive protest against draft regulations proposed by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Karachi Students Protest Sindh Government Negligence

Jamiat-e-Islami (JI) leader Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman Monem criticized the Sindh government for its handling of educational institutions. He pointed out that despite a committee's findings and recommendations, no concrete actions were taken to address issues such as discrepancies in first-year intermediate results and the lack of boundary walls for 2,980 schools. Monem specifically mentioned Karachi students facing lower pass rates compared to other areas in Sindh. He also accused the government of running educational institutions on nepotism, citing examples such as the appointment of a parliamentarian's relative as Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) secretary and another relative leading an inquiry committee into recent irregularities. Monem called for accountability and announced that Karachi students will stage a walk to the Sindh Assembly today to demand their rights.

Taliban Leader Criticized Over School Closures

Taliban official Mawlawi Abdulhaq Stanekzai has publicly criticized the closure of schools, specifically targeting supreme spiritual leader Haibatullah Akhundzada's decision to do so despite internal disagreement within the Taliban. The closures have been widely condemned by international diplomats and Islamic scholars, who argue that they contradict the Taliban's claims to respect women's rights under Islamic law and Afghan culture. The Taliban had initially promised to reopen high schools for girls in 2022 but later made a U-turn, and have since closed universities to female students.

JI Chief Demands Action on Karachi Students' Rights

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Monem Zafar Khan has criticized the Sindh government for allegedly depriving students in Karachi of their rightful academic recognition. He pointed out that several students who scored over 80 percent marks in their matriculation exams were marked absent or unfairly categorized as failed in their intermediate results, a situation that occurred last year and led to a charge sheet against a deputy controller of examinations. Despite the individual being declared an absconder, they were later promoted to controller of examinations, eroding trust in the system. Zafar also criticized the government's handling of university admissions and entrance exams, including the MDCAT, claiming that Karachi students are being marginalized. He demanded the reconstitution of a 12-member committee with credible educationists and issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the issue to be resolved, threatening protests outside the Chief Minister's House or Governor's House if not addressed.
