AI Fails to Replace Human Jobs in Most Fields

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked debate about its potential impact on society, with some predicting it will bring about significant economic growth and others warning of a dystopian future where AI surpasses human capabilities. However, an analysis of the current job market suggests that AI is not yet delivering revolutionary productivity benefits, with many jobs such as radiologists, journalists, paralegals, accountants, office workers, and human drivers still in high demand. According to one expert, it's estimated that only around 5% of tasks currently performed by humans will be replaced by AI over the next decade, due to the complexity of tasks requiring judgment, multidimensional reasoning abilities, and social skills.

Fadnavis Orders AI-Driven Road Safety Revamp

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the state transport department to increase the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to reduce road accidents. The government has signed an agreement with Google to implement this plan, which aims to enhance security and sustainability in the sector. As part of this initiative, over 13,000 outdated government vehicles will be scrapped, while older buses will be replaced or retrofitted with LNG or CNG kits. Additionally, a new electric vehicle policy is set to be released within three years, and bike taxi and maxi cab services are being introduced to improve urban mobility. Fadnavis also emphasized the need for Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure bus safety in accident-prone areas.

Cambridge Researchers Warn of 'Intention Economy'

Researchers at the University of Cambridge's Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence have warned about a new commercial frontier called the "intention economy" where conversational AI tools may influence users' decision-making. This emerging sector, which combines knowledge of online habits with user profiling and Large Language Models (LLMs), could lead to "social manipulation on an industrial scale". The researchers argue that unless regulated, this marketplace will treat users' motivations as a currency, potentially impacting free and fair elections, a free press, and fair market competition.

Young Aussies Embrace Generative AI at Workplaces

Young Australians are rapidly adopting generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini in the workplace, with 58% of Gen Z workers already using them, according to a study by Hatch, an online jobs marketplace. The research found that nearly all (93%) of respondents were not concerned about AI threatening their job security. Despite the risks associated with the technology, including "hallucinations" and security risks, young workers are embracing AI as a tool to enhance their work. To mitigate these risks, experts recommend establishing guidelines and training employees on how to detect and address hallucination, bias, and error in AI-generated responses.
