New Jersey Ditches Teacher Certification Tests

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed Act 1669 into law, eliminating the requirement for teachers to pass basic reading, writing and mathematics tests to be eligible for public school positions. The law aims to address teacher shortages in the state by making it easier for aspiring educators to join the profession. Despite receiving broad support from the state legislature with a 34-2 vote, the move has been met with criticism from some, including billionaire Elon Musk. The new law still requires teachers to hold a bachelor's degree and pass specialized tests within their subject area. According to the New Jersey Education Association, the law removes an "unnecessary barrier" for qualified candidates who may not perform well on standardized tests.
