Ralph Lemon Honors Ancestors at Walker Art Center

Ralph Lemon's exhibition at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis explores the intersection of traditional African sculptures and modern cultural icons, including entertainers and businesspeople. The artist juxtaposes these two entities to highlight the spiritual significance of ancestral legacies and their connection to contemporary narratives of influence. Lemon's own history is deeply intertwined with the exhibition, as he traveled extensively through Africa, Asia, and the American South to learn about various cultures and art practices. He collaborated with Walter Carter, a former sharecropper from Mississippi, on a series of videos, photographs, and artifacts called Cessna Road, which documents Carter's "task-based para-performances" in response to Lemon's choreographic instructions. The exhibition also features a reimagined version of the meal table from their memorial dance after Carter's passing, symbolizing the enduring brilliance of their collaboration and Lemon's legacy of storytelling, memory, and transformation.

Scrawlspace: Ligon, Sabur, Cokes at 8th Floor Gallery

The exhibition "Scrawlspace" at the 8th Floor gallery in Chelsea, Manhattan explores the intersection of language and Black experience in America. The show features works by artists Alesandrini and Momoh, as well as Glenn Ligon, Jamilah Sabur, Tony Cokes, and Kameelah Janan Rasheed, who push the boundaries of language and form to create a sense of dislocation and fragmentation. Their works, such as "Study for Debris Field #38" by Glenn Ligon and "Mnemonic Alphabet (P/Prédio)" by Jamilah Sabur, hint at the idea that there is something beneath the surface of language, something that cannot be fully expressed or contained. The exhibition creates a kind of portal to elsewhere, inviting viewers to consider the ways in which language can both reveal and conceal meaning.

Turkish Glass Waste Transformed into Art Pieces

In Cappadocia, Turkey, glass waste from discarded bottles is being repurposed into decorative items and products by blending it with local soil as part of a collaboration between the Ahiler Development Agency (AHİKA) and Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University's Faculty of Fine Arts. The project aims to reduce environmental damage caused by tourism-related waste, while also promoting the region's image and fostering awareness about recycling among artists. Glass bottles are collected from hotels, restaurants, and trash bins in the region, sorted by color, cleaned, and ground into different sizes before being combined with clay used in local ceramics production. The resulting products are fired at high temperatures to create decorative items, artwork, and functional products.

Artists like Mustafa Muhanna and Ghanem Alden are participating in the biennale with works that reflect the harsh realities of life under siege, including a car adorned in traditional Gazan dress and a postcard featuring a carrot. The event aims to raise awareness about the situation in Gaza and encourage art institutions to partner with Palestinian artists to exhibit their work transnationally.

Nikki A. Greene's 'Grime, Glitter, and Glass' Explores

Nikki A. Greene's book "Grime, Glitter, and Glass" explores the intersection of visual art, sound, and touch in contemporary Black art. The book is structured like a song composition, with five sections that focus on individual artists - Renée Stout, Radcliffe Bailey, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, and others. Greene delves into each artist's work within their specific regional context, such as the US mid-Atlantic for Stout, the American South for Bailey, and Cuba and Caribbean diasporic relations to the US for Campos-Pons. By combining mini-biographies with socio-political historical accounts, Greene maps out a rich artistic family tree that highlights the connections between art, music, and culture in Black communities.
