USAID's Gaza Aid Frozen by Trump Freeze

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has been unable to deliver aid to Gaza due to a funding freeze imposed by President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency. Despite receiving approval for $383 million in funding, USAID was forced to cut $40 million from the budget, which was allocated for direct cash assistance. As a result, partner organizations, including prominent NGOs and UN agencies, have been unable to receive promised payments, leading them to scale back their programs and reduce spending.

Utah Law Professors Dodge Trump's DEI Threats

Healthcare entities that roll back their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs due to threats from the Trump administration may face lawsuits and diminished care quality. Despite a Supreme Court ruling in 2023 allowing DEI programs to exist, some institutions are renaming "diversity" and "health equity" but continuing the underlying programs. This approach is being taken by Daniel Aaron of the University of Utah College of Law, Jonathan Feingold of Boston University School of Law, and Quang-Tuyen Nguyen of the University of Utah.

Women's Rights Erode in 25% of Global Countries

A United Nations report has found that women's rights have weakened in 25% of countries worldwide, driven by factors such as climate change, democratic decline, and anti-rights movements. Despite progress since the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action, including a doubling of female representation in parliaments to 25%, men still dominate with 75% of parliamentarians. The report also highlights ongoing issues such as gender employment gaps, conflict-related sexual violence, which has risen 50% in the last decade, and online gender-based violence affecting over 53% of women in 12 European and Central Asian countries. However, the UN notes that most countries have reached parity in education, and 112 countries now have a national plan to engage women in peace and security processes, up from 19 in 2010.
