Portable System Accurately Detects MCI in Seniors

A new portable system has been developed to measure motor function in older adults, including those with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), which is a precursor to Alzheimer's and dementia. The device accurately identified 83% of participants with MCI through machine learning technology while performing tasks such as standing still, walking, and standing up from a bench. Associate Professor Trent Guess believes the system can detect subtle differences in motor function related to balance and walking that may go unnoticed by observation. This technology has potential applications for individuals with concussions, sports rehabilitation, ALS, Parkinson's disease, knee replacements, and hip replacements.
