Pope Francis to Call for AI Treaty at G7 Summit
June 13, 2024
Pope Francis is set to address the G7 summit in Italy, calling for a binding international treaty to regulate the development and use of artificial intelligence. This comes as governments scramble to respond to the rapid growth of AI, with the European Union approving comprehensive rules earlier this year. The Pope’s address is likely to focus on the need for regulation that takes into account the risks and benefits of AI, particularly for the most vulnerable individuals. So far, Europe has taken more comprehensive steps to regulate AI than other countries which have focused on specific AI concerns (e.g. deepfakes).
