A new study published in the Journal of Research in Personality found that developing optimism and learning to flexibly cope with challenges can help maintain and improve mental health, particularly during times of social isolation, health concerns, and economic uncertainty. Led by Jeewon Oh from Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences, researchers explored how personal characteristics influence well-being during prolonged stressors like the pandemic. The study used data from the Health and Retirement Study to discover that greater optimism promotes resilience and well-being, while lower pessimism is linked to safer health behaviors.
