The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed defining AI-generated content as that created by computational technology or machine-based systems, including AI-generated voices and actors. The proposal comes amid concerns about political campaigns using generative AI to mislead voters, with examples including fake videos and images used in Indian elections. Advocacy groups are calling for regulation of AI-generated deepfakes in political ads, with some lawmakers introducing legislation requiring disclosure requirements on AI-generated content. A bipartisan bill has been introduced to require disclaimers on political ads made or altered using AI, but no bills have passed yet. The FCC’s proposal is part of a broader effort to address the spread of online misinformation ahead of November elections.
