EU Releases Comprehensive AI Framework
May 18, 2024
The European Union has released the world’s most far-reaching rules to govern artificial intelligence (AI), including powerful systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The new framework requires transparency and oversight, including identifying content generated by AI systems to users, in order to protect citizens from potential risks while fostering innovation on the continent. The EU’s AI regulations aim to strike a balance between promoting technological advancements and ensuring accountability, with senior officials emphasizing the need for caution as AI technology continues to develop at a rapid pace. Below is an excerpt from the document:
The Drafters wished to emphasize that artificial intelligence systems offer unprecedented opportunities to protect and promote human rights, democracy and the rule of law. At the same time, they also wished to acknowledge that there are serious risks and perils arising from certain activities within the lifecycle of artificial intelligence such as, for instance, discrimination in a variety of contexts, gender inequality, the undermining of democratic processes, impairing human dignity or individual autonomy, or the misuses of artificial intelligence systems by some States for repressive purposes, in violation of international human rights law.
