China's AI+ Initiative and Newly Established Research Institutes

China launched its so-called “AI+” initiative in its Government Work Report in March, which observers said is aimed to effectively apply AI to all aspects of the national economy. Crucial to the initiative is developing AI talent in top universities; the Shanghai Jiao Tong University set up its own school of AI in April, following the lead of Tsinghua University.
