Australian Businessman Sues Meta Over Deepfake Ads

Artificial intelligence played a significant role in a massive crypto scam campaign on Facebook, according to a lawsuit filed by Dr. Andrew Forrest. The scam used deepfakes, which are AI-generated videos that appear real, featuring Forrest endorsing cryptocurrency schemes and other dubious investment opportunities. Over 1,000 such ads ran in Australia between April and November 2023. Meta’s own advertising tools, which leverage generative AI to enhance visuals, were allegedly used to create some of the deepfakes.
