AI Analyzes Elephant Vocalizations in Kenya
June 12, 2024
Researchers have successfully applied machine learning algorithms to analyze vocalizations of African savannah elephants in Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve and Amboseli National Park. The study found that elephants use specific calls for each individual, recognizing and responding to intended calls while ignoring those meant for others. This unique form of communication has implications for our understanding of animal intelligence and social behavior. The AI model was able to predict which elephant was being addressed 28% of the time, likely due to the inclusion of its name in the call. This study highlights the ability of elephants and other naming species to learn new sounds throughout their lives. The findings demonstrate the potential for AI to aid in understanding animal communication patterns.
